EDUCATION INNOVATOR.
Growing out of her experiences in fashion and art education, Phelan recognized the necessity for a dramatic change in the way education is occurring in the United States, and the opportunity to bring creative thinking to the educational arena. Having taught thousands of students in the applied arts realm and seen the way that they are being ill-equipped in their early years to be inventive thinkers, she has become a vocal advocate for educational innovation and reform from the earliest years onward.
Years of research into educational methodologies and curricula laid the foundation for her cross-disciplinary learning practices. An Education Innovator, her passion for engaging in progressive learning experiences combines the latest in learning research and technologies with solid teaching practices culled from a variety of educational methodologies, with a focus on Charlotte Mason Pedagogy. She is driven to engaging others in a discussion on how to bring individuality and personal meaning to the learning experience, re-thinking the educational model that is currently employed in America today.
She has given TEDx talks on Educational Innovation (TED profile). Her initial TEDx talk "Does Education Erase Identity?" resonated with listeners around the world, identifying both the problems inherent in our Industrial Age educational model and solutions to bring personal identity and meaning back into learning for all students. Her next TEDx talk "Fashion Can Transform Education" explored how a creative, multi-lens approach to primary and secondary education has the power to transform American education.
